The Story of La Bastide
History, luxury, and the enchanting beauty of Provence come together at La Bastide à Gordes, our hilltop hideaway with a cultural heritage stretching back over five centuries.
A timeless retreat in the heart of the Luberon
The history of La Bastide dates back more than five hundred years, but it’s the spirit of 18th-century bastides – the traditional country houses typical to this region – that is so irresistibly captured here in Gordes.
The unassuming façade on the rue de la Combe offers no hint to the magnificent domain that lies beyond, but stretched gracefully across the hillside is a hidden world of terrace gardens, historic interiors, and seemingly endless views.
A village for artists
In 1948, the painter Victor Vasarely and his wife fell in love with the Luberon Valley, choosing to spend every summer immersed in the stunning landscapes and magical Provençal light that has captivated artists for centuries.
Vasarely was not the only painter inspired by the region – Marc Chagall, Jean Deyrolle, Serge Poliakoff André Lhote – all have been drawn to this haven for artists.
Exceptional natural heritage
In 2015, La Bastide opened its doors as an Airelles maison, having called on the artistry of more than 150 craftsmen and women to honour the past of this historic bastide.
With such attention to detail, architect and interior designer, Christophe Tollemer, has created a true Provençal home; a home brought to vivid life by authentic European antiques, period artworks, beautiful wood carvings and Provence-inspired fabrics by Maison Pierre Frey. The result is a loving preservation of the maison’s extraordinary identity – and a love song to the region.
