The Story of Le Grand Contrôle
To cross the threshold of Le Grand Contrôle is to step back in time. Commissioned by King Louis XIV himself, this storied residence is an invitation to the heyday of the French court, when these gilded rooms played their own part in the history of France.
A royal legacy
The only hotel located within the grounds of the Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle enjoys an unrivalled setting. Built in 1681 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect behind the Hall of Mirrors, the Grand Trianon, and the Royal Chapel, this remarkable residence embodies the splendour of 18th-century France at its height.
Once the official residence of the Controller-General of Finances the highest-ranking office after the King it welcomed Europe's political and cultural elite, as well as many of the leading minds of the Age of Enlightenment.
A loving restoration
In 2021, Airelles unveiled Le Grand Contrôle, the only hotel located within the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. Its meticulous restoration, led by architect Christophe Tollemer and based on a detailed 1788 inventory, faithfully preserved the building's original architecture and decorative heritage.
The fabrics, recreated by Maison Pierre Frey, draw inspiration from the archives of Versailles, while period furnishings have been carefully sourced from European antique dealers and prestigious auctions. Modern lighting has been discreetly designed to recreate the warm glow of candlelight, evoking the intimate atmosphere of the 18th century.
