The Story of Château d’Estoublon
Set within 300-hectares of vineyards and olive groves, Château d’Estoublon has lived to the rhythm of the harvests since 1489. In the heart of the Alpilles Massif, discover a 17th-century Château with a history as rich as the Provençal terroir on which it stands.
A mediaeval legacy
The history of the Château d'Estoublon dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, when the property – then known as Le Grand Mas – was under the control of the noble Baux family. In 1489 the estate was bought by the de Grilles, another noble lineage in whose care the estate would remain for the next four centuries. Although almost completely destroyed during the capture of Les Baux in 1561, this wasn’t the end of the Le Grand Mas story – merely the end of one chapter.
From Le Grand Mas to Château Estoublon
Under the watchful eye of the de Grilles, reconstruction of the present Château began in 1642 and was completed by the end of the 17th century. When the de Grilles were granted the title of “Marquis d’Estoublon”, Le Grand Mas proudly donned its new title – Château d’Estoublon. Today, a visit to the Château is a journey through time, with the stately pale-stone façade and grand spaces bearing witness to the Château’s rich history as a noble country estate.
From the frost to the future
After more than four hundred years, the de Grille family parted ways with Château d’Estoublon in 1922. A decade later, it was the Lombrage family who dedicated themselves to replanting the olive groves after the devastating frost of 1956. Today, the Château, its wines and olive oils are a lasting tribute to the passion and commitment shown by each of the estate’s custodians.
Centuries of care
Almost three hundred years after the estate’s first olive oil mill was built, the olives of Château d’Estoublon are still being pressed within hours of harvesting. 120 hectares of olive trees speak to centuries of tradition and care, with more than forty varieties of olive trees from all over the world grown alongside the estate’s emblematic varieties. To this is added a deep commitment to sustainability and conservation in the use of organic fertilisers, eco-grazing, natural grassing, the promotion of biodiversity and the protection of rare species.
Provence in a glass
Cultivated organically for more than twenty years, the vines of Château d’Estoublon benefit not only from the Mediterranean climate and seemingly endless Provençal sunshine, but the region’s deep, well-drained soils. From Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvirnon and Mourvèdre, to Roussanne, Marsanne, Rolle, Cinsault and Counoise, Château d’Estoublon’s sun-soaked harvests result in fresh, elegant Roseblood rosés, structured reds and elegant whites.
An exceptional venue
In 2019, Château d’Estoublon became part of the Airelles collection. Under the expert eye of French architect, Christophe Tollemer, the Château was lovingly renovated in 2016 to create the luxurious Provençal home-from-home it is today. Ten uniquely appointed Rooms and Suites, stunning gardens, and the exceptional culinary offering at the estate’s restaurant, La Table d’Estoublon, make the Château the perfect Provençal venue for exclusive celebrations, magical weddings and – of course – superb olive oil and wine tasting experiences.
